You may be asking yourself what a Butter Cookie is and that’s ok. It turns out that these days Butter Cookies are called Spritz Cookies. I’m not sure when or why this happened or if they were always Spritz Cookies and my family just didn’t know – but they will always be Butter Cookies to me. Do they have a lot of butter in them? Yes, they do! However, they are so delicious and when you are eating one you will fully feel the holiday spirit! They are also easy to make – but I recommend having a friend or family member to make them with to add to the fun. I was always on decorating duty growing up and I took my job very seriously. Probably where my OCD set in as I always wanted to make sure each cookie had an equal amount of sugar sprinkles!
Makes about 120 cookies
Ingredients:
- 1lb Butter (room temp)
- 5 cups of All-Purpose Flour
- 1 cup of Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
- ¼ teaspoon of Salt
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1 Cookie Press with festive cookie disks/shapes
- Decorative Sugar Sprinkles (I do red & green – but it’s fun to mix up the colors any way
you like)
Directions:
- Preheat Oven to 400 degrees
- Cream/Beat Butter in a standing mixer (if you don’t have one – ask for one for Christmas or the next gift giving holiday)
- Add Sugar and continue to cream/beat
- Add Eggs and Vanilla – beating after each
- Add Salt and Baking Powder - mix, mix, mix
- Add the Flour – one cup at a time – mix in well after each cup
- Put dough in Cookie Press and press out onto ungreased cookie sheets (I prefer the tree shape)
- Sprinkle Cookies with the Sugar Sprinkles (try not to make a mess)
- Bake at 400 degrees for about 8 minutes – keep a close eye on them so the bottoms don’t burn
- Enjoy!
These cookies are just so good! They can be a bit addictive and if you are like some people in our family you will start eating them like chips.
